So rather than risk building my own and burning my house down, I decided to purchase an off the shelf energy diverter.  There are other options that provide a lot more in the way of monitoring, but I decided to go with the simplest option and see if I could some how work out how to extract info about what it was doing.

Of course the first thing I did was dismantle it.
